Hemp Oil vs. CBD Oil: 5 Unique Differences Between Hemp Oil and CBD Oil

On the surface, hemp oil and CBD oil may seem like they are the same thing, but they are not the same. This is mostly because they come from the same family species: the cannabis plant. The cannabis plant is from the genus Cannabis, and within the genus, there are 3 different species of the plant which include:

  • Indica
  • Sativa
  • Ruderalis

Hemp oil and CBD oil both come from the plant Cannabis Sativa; however, hemp is more similar to the Cannabis Indica. They also, both contain low levels of THC meaning they are not psychoactive like marijuana. This means neither CBD nor Hemp oil will get you high.

Although both oils are derived from the same genus plant, they are different in many ways. Here are 5 unique differences between Hemp Oil and CBD Oil:

#1 They are Derived from Different Parts of the Plant

Although hemp oil and CBD oil come from the “same plant,” they are derived from very different parts of the plant.

    • Seeds: Hemp oil is derived from the seeds of the hemp plant. It is made much like almond and olive oils.
    • Flowers, leaves, and Stalks: CBD, on the other hand, is derived from the flowers, leaves, and stalks of the hemp plant.

#2 Hemp Oil Has Low CBD

Hemp oil has a very low CBD count. It taps in at about 3.5%. The low concentration means that Hemp oil is not going to give you the medicinal benefits that CBD would give you. Because of the low count of both THC and CBD, Hemp oil has significantly different uses as compared to CBD oil.

On-the-other-hand, CBD has high CBD hence the name. In fact, it usually has about 20% CBD in it compared to the low 3.5% of Hemp oil. Because CBD works in our endocannabinoid system, it is used ideally for medicinal purposes.

#3 They Have Different Uses

As stated above, Hemp oil and CBD oil vary greatly in the way that they are used. Because they are derived from different parts of the plant, they have very different uses.

Hemp Oil

Hemp oil can be found in all kinds of things but is primarily found in food stuff. It is used much like olive oil or coconut oil. When used in food, hemp oil can provide the following nutritional benefits to your diet:

  • Vitamin E
  • Magnesium
  • Vitamin B1 and B2
  • Potassium
  • Omega-3 and Omega-6 (provides nutrition for your brain)
  • Prevents degenerative conditions in heart and other organs
  • Lowers blood fat levels.
  • Promotes a healthy immune system.

Although Hemp oil is primarily found in food stuff, it can also be used for industrial purposes as well. Here are a few other uses we have found for Hemp oil besides ingesting it for nutritional purposes:

  • Shampoo
  • Lotion
  • Soap
  • Biodiesel fuel
  • Plastics
  • Paint

Hemp oil can have a lot of benefits, but it should be used much like you would any other oils. For example, using oils in food can increase polyunsaturated fatty acids in the body, produce harmful peroxides under high heat, cause digestive issues, and can affect your body’s ability to clot.

CBD Oil

CBD is one of the 104 cannabinoids found in the Cannabis Sativa plant. Cannabinoids are chemicals which give the cannabis plant its medicinal properties. Cannabinoids like CBD interact with different receptors in the body to give a wide range of effects. In order to understand CBD, you must understand how the endocannabinoid system in our body works.

The endocannabinoid system is a system in the human body that consists of cannabinoids such as CBD and cannabinoid receptors. Cannabinoids such as CBD bind to the receptors much like a key fits into a lock. When CBD oil is taken, it unlocks the receptors causing changes in how cells function which leads to the many different uses of CBD oil. CBD oil is primarily used as a medicine to treat the following:

  • Cancer cell growth
  • Bacteria growth
  • Bone growth
  • Anxiety
  • Psoriasis
  • Insomnia
  • Seizures
  • Nervous system degeneration
  • Inflammation
  • Chronic pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • IBS
  • Muscle spasms

As CBD continues to be researched and tested, we are learning more and more about its effects on the body and what it can be used for. Although hemp and CBD can be used nutritionally, Hemp oil is not used to treat ailments.

# 4 They are Produced Differently

CBD and Hemp oil are both produced differently. Hemp oil is produced by pressing the seeds of the hemp plant. The seeds will then extract oil that can be collected and used much like other common oils including olive oil, coconut oil, peanut oil, and sesame oil.

CBD oil, on the other hand, go through a more lengthy process when it is produced. The process in which we get CBD is called solvent extraction. This means a solvent like alcohol, butane, or CO2 is forced across and through the plant where it can separate the cannabinoids, terpenes, and trichomes. Then, the solvent is left to evaporate. Once evaporated, it leaves behind a cannabinoid that is packed with CBD oil.

#5 They Require Different Levels of Testing

Because CBD and Hemp oil are used for different things, the testing it goes through will be different. Hemp plants do not go through testing of THC content, but they must have testing of their fatty acids. Because hemp is typically used as any other cooking oil, it does not go under as much scrutiny as CBD.

CBD oil must go through independent laboratory analysis and certification for both levels of THC and levels of CBD. This is because CBD is used as a medicinal supplement. In fact, it is recommended that when buying CBD, that the company has also undergone third-party lab testing which guarantees the amount of CBD and THC advertised on the bottle.

Nuvelio Naturals undergoes third-party lab testing and guarantees the amount of CBD advertised on the bottle, and never contains more than 0.3% of THC. Along with this testing, we offer transparency throughout our entire process maintaining and adhering to strict guidelines.
